Light-Physical, Emotional and Spiritual

Light is the stuff of photography. A photographic image is made of light in its varying intensities. But just as important is light's enormous influence on our physical, emotional, symbolic and visual world. Light's effect is unavoidable and ever present. Light reveals, illumines, enlightens, defines and is associated with wisdom, warmth, nobility, good, God and life. Light's absence can suggest the opposite. And light can overwhelm, wash out, burn up and blow out.  Hence an awareness of the symbolic and visual significance of light in our lives, and in all of art, is central in the development of an artist. College of Physicians Wedding

Melissa and Kevin were married on November 1, 2013 at the College of Physicians in Philadelphia. What a great backdrop for a Halloween wedding! The ghosts, I mean, guests arrived appropriately attired for a geniune and bonefied monster mash.  Everyone got into the spirit and did some extensive gobblin' at the extended cocktail hour, thanks to Catering By Design. It was a festive evening and a photojournalistic photographer's dream.  We thank Melissa and Kevin for  allowing us to document yet another important moment in the history of our friends and former neighbors, the Focht family. 

Bridget & Danny's Engagement Photography

Here's Bridget and Danny's engagement photography session on the Bryn Mawr College campus. We will be photographing their wedding in April at the William Penn Inn in  Lower Gwynedd, Pennsylvania. This couple is so loving and comfortable together and so easy to photograph. And what a wonderful location!

Sydney's Bat Mitzvah

Sydney's Bat Mitzvah was a lively affair. Her service took place at Beth Am Israel in Penn Valley and her party was at Front & Palmer in the South Kensington Art District of Philadelphia. Sydney's parents, brother, sister, and grandparents were all on board for the bimah and fun family photos at the synagogue. It was a beautiful fall day and we took full advantage of the light inside and out. The party was an evening affair at a brand new venue that used to be a barrel factory. However, this artsy and exciting venue is all dressed up and a wonderful place to see and be seen.  The decor, the food, and its presentation was amazing, and we made sure to capture the ambient mix of light, love, and spirit  as Sydney celebrated her rich heritage and a job well done. 

How to Photograph a 3 Year Old

Photographing pets, sports, and 3 year olds requires a similar set of skills.  Each involves a subject that is often out of your control to some degree.  I found a great background of backlit, colorful leaves, and put his favorite card in place to anchor him down.  Reflectors were placed in the sun to throw some great light on him. We had 3-4 minutes to shoot him before he was off and running around the yard again.
